Speciss College have been an NCC Education Accredited Partner Centre for over 22 years, and are our second longest standing customer. This is a fantastic achievement considering that Zimbabwe has one of the lowest GDP’s in Africa due to prolonged political uncertainty. Speciss endeavour to assist in overcoming this by contributing to the number of highly skilled graduates ready for the workplace. Their commitment to student experience and ensuring that students succeed in their employment has paid off and is clear with the number of activities they run on a yearly basis.
The most recent event was held at the end of June 2012. The Harare Gardens, where the event was held, was buzzing, as the inaugural Speciss College Careers Expo brought together students, examining bodies, industry representatives, tuition providers and over 40 exhibitors.
Students attended the two-day Careers Expo and were exposed to various career options. Nyasha Antonio, an Upper Sixth student at Warren Park High School, said he had found the Careers Expo very helpful. “This event has introduced me to many interesting career prospects which I did not know about before.” said Nyasha.
NCC Education’s Business Development Manager, Marcelle Du Rand, flew in from Cape Town to take part in the Expo. She talked through the qualifications available at Speciss, and showed students the NCC Education ‘Change Your World’ video, which went down very well, with crowds of students flocking around Marcelle’s laptop to watch it! Marcelle said “I applaud the Careers Expo for bringing together many different organisations in one place where students can easily access useful career information from the relevant industry experts. The Careers Expo is a great initiative and it was especially beneficial for students as it provided a one-stop shop for information.” Marcelle also expressed hope that the Careers Expo would become an annual function and promised that NCC Education would continue to support future editions.
Students and career guidance teachers who attended the Careers Expo were given ‘career packs’ outlining a range of careers in detail. Leading recruitment agency CV experts were on hand to advise the students on how to write an effective CV; there were also handy resources at the stand for students to read through.
In addition to providing students with career information, the Careers Expo also enabled the various exhibitors to network and to establish business relationships. Mr Chris Mafuwa, the Chairman for the Zimbabwean chapter of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, said that the Careers Expo had provided the Institution with a great networking opportunity. “This expo was a great forum as we got to meet people from other economic sectors which complement our industry.” said Mr Mafuwa.
According to Ms Sue McNally, the Speciss College Director for Education and Quality Assurance, the Careers Expo was a resounding success. “We are happy with the feedback we continue to receive from participants and we plan on organising an even more extensive and informative Careers Expo next year.”
